Week 6: Theory-Driven Call and the Development Process

My Reflection

I agree that the notion of ‘fit’ is most valuable. It is the ‘fit’ between the computer’s capabilities and the demands of language pedagogy. I also think all CALL should not be theory-driven. If all CALL is theory-driven, it is not easy to put it into practice. It may have some limitations and problems. Therefore, if the framework is too ideal, it is impossible to turn it into practice.

Surely, design is not static, it is changing from time to time. It is not uncommon that the initial theory may be deformed or reinvented under some circumstances.

I know it is important that their integrated theoretical framework must be combined with a knowledge of how the technology is most effectively applied. It is the most successful to reconcile their theory, their pedagogy or their methodology with the capabilities of the technology. It is a successful fit.

There are some constraints such as funding and programming expertise. I think time is also a factor of constraints.

I think it is not easy to find the best framework, since our technology has its strengths and limitations. It is good to try to balance among a theory of instructional design, a theory of teaching, a theory of learning and the limitation of our technology.

Both formalist and procedural approaches have their potential strengths and limitations. Finally, it is better to find the notion of ‘fit’ between the goal of a theory and an application.

Week 5: Language Learner Behavior in a Virtual Environment

My Reflection

This article is to compare different human behavior when people communicate online and a face-to-face situation. The research has stated that people show fewer inhibitions, display less social anxiety, and reduce their public self-awareness when they communicate online. Honestly, I have the same experience with the research. When I communicate online, I really feel less anxiety and I am willingly to talk. I agree online learning or a virtual learning is one of good method for second language acquisition. Online learning is good to motivate some shy students to learn second language.

I think the skill of a face-to-face conversation is more difficult than online communication. It is not only about the accent, but also the grammar, the content and the time. For example, if the native-speaker speaks very fast, the second language learner may not catch the meaning. Then, the second language learner may be no respond or may be respond wrongly to the native-speaker. It may create some hinders for their face-to-face communication.

Different second language learners may have different behaviors on online learning. They may well benefit from computer based language learning tasks or the learning outcome is poor.

Though there are many advantages of the online learning, I think a face-to-face conversation is better for second language acquisition. For example, if a native speaker talks with me, I will try my best to communicate with him. I feel a face-to-face communication could attract me and motivate me for second language acquisition. I may take the online learning is a supplementary method for second language acquisition. I also agree at least the virtual environment can work as scaffolding for second language acquisition

Finally, this article gives me an alert of students’ behavior changes and the perception of students’ behavior when students are online learning.

Assignment 2: Proposal and Reflection guidelines

The procedure of our presentation:

First: introduce our groupmates: Kelvin, Chung and me.

Second: show our chosen website: ESLvideo http://www.eslvideo.com/

Third: state our target learners: P4 or P5, age, motivation and learning environment, etc.

Fourth: evaluate the website from the points of operational description (Activity type), teacher fit (computer as delivery system) and learner fit (Learner focus and language difficulty). We point out the strength and weakness of the website from the above-mentioned three points.

Next, we overall evaluate this website whether it is suitable for teaching and learning language. We evaluate its advantages and its disadvantages.

At last, we give a comment to decide whether teachers could use this website for language teaching or not.
